Iloilo Water Resilience Initiative (IWARI)

The Iloilo Water Resilience Initiative is a collaborative effort aimed at enhancing water availability from the Tigum-Aganan and Iloilo-Batiano Watersheds to benefit both upstream and downstream communities, including Iloilo City. With the partnership between Coca-Cola Foundation, Catholic Relief Services, the US Agency for International Development, and Green Forum Panay Guimaras, Inc., this initiative seeks to reach 200,000 households and support watershed governance across nine local government units namely: Leon, Alimodian, Maasin, Cabatuan, Sta. Barbara, Janiuay, Pavia, Iloilo City, and Oton. Additionally, it aims to conserve 200 million liters of water per day through sustainable water management practices.

A key strategy of the initiative is Conjunctive Water Management, which integrates surface water diversions and groundwater withdrawals to maximize efficiency and minimize ecological impact. This approach ensures that all available freshwater resources, including rainfall, treated wastewater, and groundwater, are effectively utilized. The project also employs GIS-enabled hydrologic modeling to assess land use impacts on water resources and implements riverbank restoration to stabilize soil, conserve biodiversity, and improve water filtration. By fostering sustainable watershed management and governance, the Iloilo Water Resilience Initiative is creating a lasting impact on water conservation and climate resilience in the project area.
